On Thursday, career day, I unfortunatly was not able to shadow my mentor. Instead I shadowed my mother, which I didn't have problem with because I love what she does. My mother is an anthropology professor and is also working at UCR on a project. When we arrived to campus I noticed right away that we weren't headed toward her regular classroom, instead we walked down to the basement under the library. My mom had been working on bones and organizing them based on location--the British Muesum, UCLA, France--so that they could be sent back after inspection. There were all sorts of bones that varied between thousands of years old, the prehistoric age, and BC. One of my favorite parts of the day was while organizing the bones, she dropped a bag and I said "Mom, you dropped a saber tooth tiger fang". That's something you get to say everyday. Throughout the afternoon I got to organize the shelves and sort out all the locations by alphabetical order, which was surprisingly hard because it was really hot in the basement and their was a lot of moving around to reach a high shelf or crouch to reach a low shelf. Doing this task took all day due to the amount of bones there were and the amount of schools and muesums that needed to organized. And while I was busy with that task, my mother got a suited up in an apron and long gloves to inspect the many bones, one of which was a neonatal skeleton from the time BC. Even though I was not able to complete a career day with my internship, I'm grateful that I was able to work on an amazing project at UCR.
