The article that I chose to do was about the tragedies currently going on in Yemen, this a article was published on CNN on April 3rd, 2018 and written by Daniel Nikbakht and Sheena McKenzie. The war in Yemen, which is now being called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, has left over 22 million people in a state of crisis. Many people are unable to find food and have little to no access to clean drinking water, putting the country at risk for a cholera epidemic. It’s said that every 10 minutes a child under the age of 5 dies of very preventable causes, which really just showcases some of the devastating tragedies occurring within the country. But what really began this nation wide crisis? The answer; the beginning of the war in early 2015. Houthi rebels, a minority group from north Yemen, was able to drive out the US backed government and take over the capital, Sanaa. This quickly led to a multi sided war that terrorist groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda thrived in, allowing them to become stronger. Furthermore the Houthis are supported by Iran, and its members follow the Shia Islamic branch of Zaidism (religion). A third of Yemen’s population are followers of Zaidism. Amidst all the chaos and war, people are struggling and weakening, a part that has not been shown very much on the media. We talk so much about the war, specifically the vicious aspects about it, but what we should be discussing is the people who are hurting and beyond that, how can we help. Not much is said about the little boys and girls dying from starvation, or the mothers that have to watch their children die because no one will help. We have to start thinking about real suffering behind war, if not we can only expect more tragedy to fall upon the human race. I will comment on Henna and Lillie’s blog posts
