The article that I chose was “Climate Change Could the Quality of Your Coffee” by Nancy Coleman from CNN, and was published on June 21st 2017.
This article talks about how Ethiopia, the world’s 5th largest coffee producer could possibly lose up to 60% of their farming land by the end of this century due to climate change.
The combination of low rainfall and rising temperature could have drastic effects on the coffee growing areas.
According to a recent study from World Coffee Research the demand for coffee will have doubled by 2050 however the land in which the coffee beans are grown on will have significantly decreased by then. Not only that but the climate change will have lessened the quality of the coffee as well. A representative then goes on to inform CNN on how the temperature affects the flavor. In cooler weather the coffee beans ripen more and create better quality beans, however in higher temperatures the beans ripen too quickly which means less flavorful beans. This will be a noticeable change for coffee drinkers. The article later goes on to elaborate on how this will affect the environment, including America. The point of this article was to grab people’s attention, not many people are that passionate about saving the planet, however they are passionate about coffee. Because so many people love coffee the article is showing how the changes could affect someone personally.
This event is taking place in Ethiopia and is currently taking place. This is caused by climate change. For those of you who don’t know climate change is a change in global or regional weather patterns, this is caused by an increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide due to fossil fuels.
Obviously I know how terrible of a situation this is and how important it is to spread awareness about these topics, however I think that this particular situation is going to really going open some eyes and help shed more light onto the topic of climate change, and hopefully more environmental issues that need to be talked about more.
